Josef Herman was born in Warsaw, Poland in His refugee journey began with a brief spell in Belgium and France before he came to the UK, first to Glasgow in , and then to Ystradgynlais in South Wales. He arrived in Ystradgynlais in and lived and worked there until Herman was among a generation of eastern European Jewish artists who emigrated to escape persecution and his often tragic personal life undoubtedly influenced his choice of media and subjects.
